Installing on Mac OS X, Linux, or other *NIX

Note: Windows users please see below for instructions.

The Forward CLI has been tested to work with Unix-based systems (Mac OS X, BSD, Linux, etc.) and requires Ruby (1.9.3 - 2.2.0) and RubyGems.

Forward is installed via the RubyGems package system, which is available by default on Mac OS X, and is available for most other platforms as well. To install the Forward CLI using RubyGems, run the following command:

gem install forward

Note: You don’t need to type the $ symbol.

If you get an error like You don't have write permissions, you may need to run the command with sudo:

sudo gem install forward

Type in your computer password (don’t worry if nothing shows up while you type), and press 'Enter'. Forward should now install properly.

Once Forward is installed, getting a link to your local dev site is a simple as:

forward 3000

For more info on how to use Forward—including how to forward different types of sites—please read Using Forward.

Note: You don’t need to type the > symbol.

If you get an error like gem is not recognized as an internal or external command please see this FAQ.
